Dave's interest in rhizomatic structures is one of the reasons I was so keen on taking this EdFutures class with him.

I think you are correct that rhizomatic thinking is not merely a polarity to linear thinking, though that is a productive starting point for trying to figure out what rhizomatic thinking is. Rather, rhizomatic thinking subsumes linear thinking. Or linear thinking is just one kind of rhizomatic thinking. In other words, rhizomatic thinking includes linear thinking, and uses it when linear thinking produces the most useful, skillful, appropriate results, but rhizomatic thinking includes all those other varieties of thinking as well: holistic, creative, visual, fractal, intuitive, etc. Rhizomatic thinking regards all strategies as more or less useful in any given situation and positions no strategy as the single pathway to reliable, sanctioned truth and knowledge.

I'm reading again through George's writings about Connectivism, and I'll post soon on the connections that I see between Connectivism and fractal, rhizomatic thinking and between fractals and rhizomes.

I, too, have been following the wonderful discussion on Emergent by Design, and as near as I can tell, this exchange is part of both our own PLNs—yours and mine. The EdFutures class is part of our PLNs, part of the overlap between your PLN and mine and all the others. Or in rhizomatic terms, this is where our rhizomes intersect and exchange energy: one ecosystem with another.

Thanks for the questions and comments.keith.hamonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08404376705918243534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4717220359532645973.post-62577571475308841262010-05-07T04:31:18.922-04:002010-05-07T04:31:18.922-04:00Hi Keith Im going to have to return to this post a...Hi Keith Im going to have to return to this post and to read Dave's Rhizomatic paper too. It would appear in my novice mind that rhizomatic thinking is in polarity with linear thinking? At the moment Im thinking that is already too simplistic a view.

I had woken this morning with the thought to ask someone inside edfutures please what does connectivism have to do with fractal thinking? I've been thinking about how fractal narratives help me see things as nested holons (Wilbur).

And now I ask how fractal thinking and rhizomes intersect please? These ideas are new for me to grasp but I feel it's possibly how I naturally think when I'm in creative flow...
ps I've been following along some with Emergent by Design Blog too...and am interested in a dynamic PLN.Ruth Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00214522132883137617noreply@blogger.com
